Apples, the Ideal Snack

It’s fall again and delicious apples are in season! Apples may very well be the perfect food. Crisp and sweet, these pre-packaged healthy snacks are an ideal on-the-go energy treat: A medium-size apple has only about 80 calories and is completely fat free, sodium free, and cholesterol free.

Athletes love apples because they’re high in fiber, which means the fruit’s natural sugars are slowly released into the blood stream, maintaining a constant blood sugar level and providing ongoing energy for extended periods of time. The high fiber content also means that apples reduce the risk of certain cancers and heart disease. Even picky eaters can find an apple they enjoy since there are over 7,500 different varieties of the delicious fruit!

And don’t forget, apples are an excellent source of phytonutrient antioxidants. Most of these valuable antioxidants, as well as two-thirds of the fiber, are in the apple’s peel, so be sure to eat your apple whole.
